Care instructions

Wood board showing before and after conditioning the board with oil.

What, when, why

Honest Woodcraft wood boards are constructed from reclaimed hardwood and exotic hardwoods. At least once a month, you should “season” it with wood balm to hydrate, condition and protect it. With consistent care, you can keep your board looking beautiful for years to come. (The left side of the board on the left has been conditioned with our own wood balm.)

Step 1. Clean

To clean and sanitize your board, wash all surfaces with a mild dish soap (preferably unscented) and warm water.

Immediately dry with a clean dish towel (leaving the board too wet could cause it to warp).

Do not put in the dishwasher or allow it to soak in water.

Step 2. Condition

Apply a fair amount of wood balm at room temperature with a soft cloth. (If the balm is in too solid of a state, you can remove some and soften it in the microwave. Make sure to allow it to cool to room temperature before pouring on the board.)

Blend into the wood using circular motions with a soft cloth or sponge.

There is no such thing as too much balm on your board. When it appears the board can’t absorb any more, simply stop applying and wipe away any excess.

Allow at least 4 hours for the wood fibers to absorb the oil before using.

Wipe down with a clean soft cloth before use.

Enjoy your good-looking wooden board!

(If your board is not used for an extended period of time, a white haze may appear. Simply buff off with a clean cloth.)

How to fix a warped board

Troubleshooting Guide: Straightening a Warped Wooden Cutting Board

Warping is a natural occurrence with wooden cutting boards, as wood is a natural material that reacts to moisture, temperature, and use over time. Here’s a simple guide to help you correct a warped board:

  1. Identify the Warped Side: Determine if the board is bowing upwards or downwards.

  2. Apply Moisture: Lightly dampen the concave (curved inward) side with a damp cloth to help the wood relax and balance. Avoid soaking the board completely.

  3. Use Heat and Pressure: Place the board on a flat surface (concave side down) and cover the top with a clean towel. Optional: place a heavy object like a large book evenly over the surface. Leave it for several hours or overnight.

  4. Monitor Progress: Check the board periodically and repeat the process if necessary.

Pro Tip: Prevent future warping by regularly oiling your board and avoiding extreme temperature or moisture changes. After washing the board, take a minute to thoroughly dry it with a towel so no moisture remains.
